The main difference between this and other law books is that this book is not primarily about making an estimate as to what the law is. Banks on Sentence sets out the source material and leaves the reader to use the material for the specific facts of the case they are considering.

The book aims to contain all the relevant cases decided by the courts before early April 2011. The case summaries seek to include all the relevant factors. Even cases which seem out of line or unrepresentative are listed, to ensure there is a complete picture. Appellants, applicants and respondents are all called defendants to make the case summaries easier to use.
